The Little India area was planned during the earliest founding of Penang by Sir Francis Light. That is why today the Little India area is sometimes referred to as the Francis Light Grid. Over the years Indian traders have converged on Little India bringing with them their communities and their shops. These traders in Little India would live above their shophouses. Some of them still do so even till today. Indians who are heading to the rubber estates in Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia would often stop over here in Penang Malaysia. The stalls and restaurants here offer a wider variety of mouthwatering Indian cuisines such as Nasi Kandar, Briyani Rice, Tandoori Chicken and the various mutton, chicken and vegetarian curries served in fragrant banana leaves. Little India is indeed famous throughout Penang for its Southern Indian and Mamak cuisines.

Little India is also home to magnificent buildings and places of worship in Penang Malaysia. The old double-storey shophouses here are wonderful examples of British colonial designs merging with Peranakan-style architectures, giving them a rustic old-world look. The intricately designed window shutters, façade and doors of the Little India shophouses will indeed captivate your eyes.

You can find the oldest Indian temple in Penang here in Little India. The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Lebuh Queen was built in 1883 with a traditional southern Indian architectural design. Within this grand temple you can see breathtaking statues and sculptures of the various Hindu deities. During Thaipusam celebrations in Penang, devotees would start their island-wide procession from this temple. The statue of one of the deities in this temple, the jewel-encrusted figure of Lord Subramaniam, would be put into a gold chariot and led through the Thaipusam procession.
