Five Essential Experiences for Holidays in Burma's Himalayas

Fertile, unspoilt, and surprising - the mountains of Burma's northernmost states are one of the country's best-kept secrets. The region is an exciting and adventurous destination for holidays in Burma, with colourful mountain markets, the villages of diverse ethnic groups, and lush, biodiverse forests. For those considering venturing into this stunning region, here are five 'must-do' moments for the quintessential Burmese Himalaya experience.

Buy: mountain produce in Putao
Putao is the starting point for many of those who venture into the northern mountains on their holidays in Burma, and it is the perfect town to introduce visitors to this part of the country - both in terms of acclimatising and getting to know the character of the region. One aspect of the town in particular is worth making time for, and that is the local market, which comes to life early in the morning as members of Rawan and Lisu villages bring their flowers, fruit and vegetables. Much of the produce will be unfamiliar to newcomers, but that's part of the adventure!

Listen: folk music at a festival
The villages of the Burmese Himalaya celebrate a variety of festivals throughout the year, some held in honour of local spirits, and others, such as New Year, based on the calendar. Rituals and activities associated with festivals will change depending on where and when your holidays in Burma take place, but one tradition many will have in common is folk music and dancing. Listen out for the bamboo mouth-harps and four-stringed 'chiben' of traditional Lisu music.

Taste: hill tribe cusine
The food of the mountain region is influenced by the diverse ethnic groups that live there, with indigenous spices and herbs, wild mountain plants and local varieties of bamboo lending it a distinct flavour that is hard to replicate elsewhere in the world. Many who visit this region on their holidays in Burma enjoy the grilled spiced pork, while those with adventurous tastebuds should try the curries.

Discover: the wildlife of the jungle
The Burmese mountains are home to a diverse range of beautiful plants and captivating animals. Species rarely seen in other parts of the country roam through the undergrowth or swoop through the trees - including gibbons, flying foxes, tigers and tapir. Most of the animals here are shy, and will stay away from groups of humans - but a knowledgable guide will be able to point out their tracks.

See: the view from Phongun Razi
The crowning moment of trekking holidays in Burma is the ascent of Phongun Razi, which stands at 3,635 metres near the Indian border. It is the perfect place from which to see the spectacular spread of the surrounding landscapes, both back into Burma and out across the Himalayas, all the way to Assam.

Jude Limburn Turner is the Marketing Manager for Mountain Kingdoms, an adventure tour company who run tours enabling people to enjoy holidays in Burma. Operating in Asia for over 20 years, they now offer treks and tours worldwide, including destinations in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Central and South East Asia.

Inspirational Travel Writing

For some lucky writers, there's a career in writing travel articles or more extended non-fiction books on the subject of other countries and cultures. It sounds like a brilliant way to make a living while indulging your passion for seeing as much as possible of this wonderful planet of ours. Online, as well as in magazine and book form, there are many great spots where writers can enthuse on the destinations that make them feel alive and inspired. No doubt the authors listed below would have embraced the internet when they began to explore the world, if only it had been invented in time!

Graham Greene
Greene was a prolific traveller who covered much of the world, resulting in numerous books and travel articles. He took a philosophical approach to visiting far flung places and his experiences led to him being recruited by MI6. His earliest piece of this kind of writing was entitled 'Journey Without Maps.' Greene embarked on the trip with a certain romance, helped not least by the fact that Liberia (the country he was visiting) wasn't mapped at the time - indeed, the fact that the US government map at the time included a large white space in the interior marked with the word 'cannibals' was probably a fascinating drawcard. Greene's journey took the form of a 350 mile, four week walk through the country's interior. Greene was exploring the country alongside his cousin Barbara who also wrote 'Too Late to Turn Back', and modern readers are often incredibly impressed by the amount of agreement and lack of contradiction between the two.

Ryszard Kapuscinski
The Don of literary reportage, Kapuscinski's travel articles have become respected by readers around the world. Born into poverty in modern day Belarus, Kapuscinski has become one of the most respected Polish writers in the world. Famed for his complex narrative techniques, Kapuscinski's writing helped to elevate this genre from the 1960s onwards. His works covered places as diverse as Ethiopia, in 'The Emperor', Iran and the fall of its Shah in 'Shah of Shahs', and the last days of the Soviet Union which he covered in 'Imperium'.

Bill Bryson
One of the most popular writers of books and travel articles working today, Bryson has penned a large number of bestsellers. Having lived a peripatetic live between his native United States and Europe, Bryson offers a wry and absorbingly anecdotal analysis of various parts of the world, a style that has become widely imitated.

Laura Jeeves is a London based travel writer with several years' experience in the industry. She is a freelance writer of travel articles and has visited many countries across the globe.

10 Helpful Tips for Travel to Cuba

Cigars are a main draw for those looking to buy but don't get tempted by the allure of cheap cigars on the street. Chances are you'll either get fakes or stolen cigars which can be confiscated at the airport.

Renting a car in Cuba is one of the best ways to see the island but there are a few things to consider. Before you head out, get a GOOD map and make sure it's up to date. Don't let the gas get too low before filling up as you may find a lot of gas stations are either out of gas or closed. A great way to get insight into the island is to pick up a hitchhiker as it is both safe and one of the main ways the locals get around.

Donations in the way of basic daily necessities such as clothes, soap, shampoo etc... are always in demand however; drop these off at either hospitals or churches and avoid using them in lieu of monetary tipping at resorts.

Food in Cuba tends to be quite bland as there are not a lot of spices and while the water is generally safe, bottled water is advisable. This is not to say the food is inedible, but if you like basic tastes like salt and pepper or hot sauce, I would recommend packing your own.

Currency in Cuba is the (CUC) Cuban convertible peso and the (CUP) Cuban Peso. Exchange at the hotel only and avoid changing money on the streets. ATMs are next to useless so get enough money for the day. Credit cards are accepted however, any American credit cards such as American Express are not. American currency is not accepted but some places will exchange for about a 20% premium.

Accommodation throughout the island range from 5-star all inclusive resorts to budget apartments and for the most authentic Cuban experience, a Casa Particular. These Cuban versions of a bed and breakfast are not only cheap but it is an excellent way to get the Cuban culture, atmosphere and friendly hospitality of living with a family in Cuba.

Beggars and street vendors are more common in the larger cities such as Havana and Santiago de Cuba and are more of a nuisance than anything. While not overly aggressive, use what I call the "seagull rule". If you either say no or ignore them, eventually they will go away. However, if you even give one of them any money you will quickly be surrounded and they will be very persistent.

Crime and personal safety is much like anywhere in the world, if you keep your head about you and be sensible, you'll be fine. Crime in Cuba is generally very low and Cuba is considered to be a very safe destination. I have seen it written many places about how women will feel safe at night even walking alone and although I don't disagree with that statement, I do find it a fairly irresponsible way of describing the safety of a destination no matter who it pertains to.

Internet in Cuba is still quite in the early stages and is not only hard to find but can be very expensive. Some of the larger resorts have internet access but really... you're on vacation in Cuba and shouldn't be on the internet anyway.

Pack necessities such as sunscreen, bug repellent and other sundries ahead of time as most of these items can only be bought at the hotel and since they know the tourist with sunburn is desperate, you can expect to pay upwards of $30 just for sunscreen.

Overall, Cuba is a pretty laid back destination that really doesn't disappoint, any problems that may arise on vacation can generally happen anywhere but by using these 10 tips, you can cut down on any unforeseen problems and spend more time enjoying the fantastic resorts and beaches of Cuba.

Travel to Cuba and experience an island rich in culture with spectacular beaches, scenic beauty and a lively, friendly atmosphere. Consider these 10 travel tips when planning your Cuba Vacations.

Sweet Wines From Malaga

Wine has a long history and tradition in Malaga. The Moors, the Romans and the British were great drinkers of wine and were richly associated in the history of Malaga. Sweet wines made from the Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez grapes has been a long time favourite and has stood the test for centuries in Malaga. However, the plagues in the 19th century threatened the wine industry in Malaga. International taste in wine turned towards dry wine, creating a further deterioration in the Malaga wine industry. There are now very few wineries in Malaga that have been able to keep the tradition alive. The wine region in Malaga is steadily gaining feet as new and sophisticated white wines are being introduced to the market.

Although these sweet wines are called Malaga sweet wines, the grapes for the wine itself are grown, pressed and fermented in other parts of the province. Only the aging process of the wine mostly takes place in Malaga. In fact there are three different grape growing zones in the province. The westernmost zone surrounds the Manilva village and is located close to the Atlantic. The region features rich soil with a humid weather, which is ideal for Moscatel grapes. Moscatel grapes grow to large sizes without losing its tantalising sweetness. This quality makes the grapes ideal and profitable for being eaten as table grapes along with being used for making wine.

The other zone falls in Axarquia, which also features Moscatel grapes as the predominant variety. The grapes here are grown on beautiful terraced vineyards without aid of mechanical tools for cultivation and harvesting. A major portion of the harvest is laid out to let dry from the sun in open dry beds. This harvest is later turned into the popular Malaga raisins.

The third zone produces most of the harvest that is used for making wines in Malaga. It is an inland zone, located to the north of Axarquia. The region experiences both, severe hot summers and extreme freezing winters. This climate results in cultivating the characteristics in grapes, required for making wine. The grapes are of the Pedro Ximenez, named after a 17th-century Spanish soldier. These grapes have very high sugar content. The sugar content is even further concentrated by letting them dry in the sun before pressing. This takes out all the moisture and leaves only sugar. The concentrated sugar gives the Malaga wines its dark colour, for both varieties of grapes are in fact white grapes.

There are countless activities in Malaga geared towards tourists on holidays in Malaga. One of them is touring the wineries in Malaga to know more about the wine making in Malaga.

M. Thornton recommends going for a wine tour while on your holidays in Malaga to know more about the history and culture of wine making in Malaga. It is one of the most rewarding activities in Malaga, you can engage in on your Malaga holidays.

Exploring Geneva While in Transit

Transfers from Geneva to Courmayeur are relatively commonplace, particularly for those heading for ski holidays. Yet regarding Geneva as merely a transit airport is to miss an opportunity. It's a beautiful place in its own right and well worth exploring.

Getting to the slopes

Whether it's for a winter ski holiday or you're off to do some summer walking and cycling in the mountains, Courmayeur is a very popular destination and Geneva is a commonly used arrival airport.

The resort's attractions are very well known and it might be understandable if holidaymakers heading there simply regarded the journey from the airport at Geneva to Courmeyeur to be something that needed to be got over with as fast as possible. If so though, that might be missing an opportunity to explore the Swiss city itself - it is a fascinating destination and spending a day or two there might allow you to diversify your holiday experience.

The Swiss city as a destination

This is an old city with roots that go back to the pre-Roman period. Located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, it was for many centuries largely or completely independent as a republic. It was temporarily annexed by France during the French Revolutionary and Directory periods in the very late 18th and earlier 19th centuries, but after the end of the Napoleonic wars the French were removed and the city and area admitted to Switzerland. Interestingly, parts of the wider municipality actually sit on French territory. It has become a major centre of world diplomacy, humanitarian endeavour, science (e.g. CERN) and finance.

Places to see

The city sits on a lake with stunning scenery backdrops and a word famous water-jet.
Strolling or cycling around the lake is a great experience. The entire old town is a wealth of interesting streets, shops and cafés. If you like historical sights and sites, you won't be disappointed.

The St Pierre cathedral is a beautiful 14th century building with later additions. The magnificent gold-topped domes of the Russian Orthodox Church are also a must.
You should also visit the Mallet House and Museum or The Museum of Art and History - both great cultural centres.

If you'd like to see a different view of the city and save a little of your leg muscles for when you reach the mountains, you might want to head for the Quai du Mont Blanc where you'll be able to take a boat trip along the river. There's also a famous museum dedicated to Voltaire, and the Conservatoire and Botanical Gardens are well worth strolling around.

The bottom line is simple. This is a truly beautiful city and, if you are in transit from Geneva to Courmeyeur, finding a little time to look around might be a really rewarding experience.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you're looking for Geneva to Courmeyeur transfer, Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don't miss your car on your holiday abroad.

The Convenience of Rentals for Longer Vacations

Rentals are dwellings that are put up for rent by their owners. These places vary depending on what the tenant is looking for. Many of the owners of places like these rent out houses, apartments condominiums, cottages and other kinds of dwellings in hopes that they can generate income to maintain themselves while the original owner is not using them. Many people invest in dwellings that they furnish with the basic necessities. It is important to furnish these domiciles with the basics because nobody would want to rent a place which has no furniture or kitchen appliances.

Benefits

Compared to a hotel or a resort, rentals like a condo unit or an apartment can be more relaxing and private. These are among the many things that many visitors like about renting an individual house instead of a room in a hotel. The relaxation stems from less pressure of housekeeping coming in and out of the room to clean up and replenish the mini bar. It also comes from the fact that not every move that is made would result to forking out a tip or an additional amount of payment to be charged to the room. Privacy is abundant because neighbors basically leave each other alone in these types of high rise buildings. Security cameras are present in condominiums but these are security measures that are understandable, the same as the ones in hotels and resorts. Other benefits that people usually find appealing with rentals include, but are not limited to, being able to bring in much more people in the domicile compared to hotels or resorts and some locations are prime ones.

Hotels and resorts usually have a limit as to how many people one can bring without additional payment for the extra heads and the extra beds needed for those extra people. These charges can accumulate and be surprising for the person paying at the end of the stay. Children are usually included in the head count, especially older ones. Location wise, many of the high rise buildings that house the condo units are located in prime areas of the city. The reason why many are in prime areas is to encourage people to buy units close to their working areas or places of interest such as malls, hospitals and schools. Prime locations are actually dependent on what the owner wants. If he or she wants to have a unit near a school, then he should look for a high rise building near a school. Rentals are usually found near commercial districts and other places where there are a lot of malls and places of interest.

The preference of getting these for a long vacation of a long trip is actually dependent on the needs of the person or family. While some people like to have the luxury that a hotel or resort can give them, many also like to concentrate on the place and places of interest that they can visit without paying much attention to the luxuries that they can get from a hotel or resort.

Not Sure Where To Go On Your Next Vacation? Read These Tips

Go over these travel tips to find out how to plan the perfect vacation. Find out how to find good deals and go to a place that you will enjoy. Planning a vacation can be a long process, and you should definitely start ahead of time. Reading these tips should help you get started.

If you are going on a long trip, bring a book with you that you always wanted to read but never had the time. Reading is a great form of mental escapism and can make your journey much more enjoyable. If you chose a non fiction book, you could also learn loads of new, interesting facts.

Before traveling on a road trip, come up with two different routes; one should include a variety of landmarks while the other should give you a direct path to your destination. By having two routes planned, you can be flexible depending on your needs. If you start to run out of time, take the faster route. Otherwise, go on the scenic route and enjoy seeing some of the local landmarks.

A simple way to save a bit of money on lodging at the beach is to take a room that is not a beach view room. If you are after the romance or have a strong desire to watch the ocean from your room or balcony, then opt for the beach view. However, if you are not as particular, you can put a few dollars in your pocket by taking a room not so in demand.

If you book a hotel that offers a mini-bar in your room, consider asking the front desk staff to hold the key instead. This will help you avoid late-night temptations, which given the prices at the minibar can get very expensive. If you feel the need for a drink but don't want to go far, go to the hotel restaurant instead.

If you have the option to do so, use a business card as your luggage tag to avoid revealing your personal information. Many unscrupulous people out there are looking for opportunities for theft or other devious schemes. Knowing you are going on a trip means that gaining your personal info from luggage offers a potentially empty home.

Now that you know the theory behind planning a great trip, the only thing to do is apply these travel tips for your next vacation. Choose where you want to go and organize your trip so that the only thing you need to worry about is having fun once on location.

Top 5 Art and Architecture Destination in India

From lotus temple in Delhi to wondrous Taj in Agra and marvelous sculptures & painting at Elephanta Island, India has a great number of destinations which entice architecture-lovers from far corners of globe. Here's my list of India's top 5 places to admire artistic creations. The list, however, has not been endorsed by any magazine or survey.

Agra: It may seem obvious, but it's not without a reason why Agra in state of Uttar Pradesh tops my list of places for art-lovers. Home to Taj Mahal: one of Seven Wonders of World, Agra is India's most talked-about tourist place. Taj Mahal, with its unique blend of Persian, Islamic and Indian architecture styles, is one of the most attention-grabbing manmade monuments on this earth. Amazing work of stone-cutting, carvings, paintings and calligraphy on white marvels leave all the visitors stunned. Even the domes & structures alongside the main complex add to the architectural beauty of this wonder. Beyond the Taj, visitors can experience flawless Mughal architecture at Red Fort. Fatehpur Shikri and other ancient buildings in the city are also worth exploring.

Delhi: Nothing beats a Delhi trip if you're the one inclined towards arts & cultures. One of the oldest cities in the world has turned to be a vibrant metropolis in India, but its age-old architectures & grand history still has a charismatic charm and never fails to impress architecture-admirers. The city has a long list of historical monuments with many of them designated as UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. From forts to monuments to religious sites, the city is like a museum of master architecture work. Mammoth Red Fort, towering Qutub Minar, impressive structure of Rasatrapati Bhawan and unique design of Lotos temple is sure to leave folks breathless. You can visit to Akashrdham Temple to view amazing carving & paint work of modern artisans.

Ajanta-Allora Caves: Stunning structures made by rock-cutting, Ajanta Caves hold an immense collection of sculptures and artworks pertaining to great Bhuddhist religion. This includes some famous paintings too, which remind us of Sigiriya paintings in Sri Lanks. As old as 2nd century BCE, these cave monuments have been a dream destination for artisans and archeologists. They are a world heritage site by UNESCO and are must-visit tourist spot in Indian state of Maharashtra.

Mahabalipuram: Mahabalipuram is undisputedly the most picturesque town of South India in sense of architectural beauty. Monolithic rock curved temples are the center of attraction, which are architectural masterpieces founded by Pallava kings. Wonderful Dravidain architectures backed with unsurpassable history & spiritualism in Mahabalipuram keep art-lovers and history-admirers flocking the city year-round. There are eight rathas in the town, which are made of rock-cutting and named after five pandawas of Mahabhartha and their wife Drupadi.

Hampi: An amazing cluster of historical ruins here takes visitors to the bygone era of Vijayanagar Empire. A vast, open landscaped and magnificent town in Karnataka state, Hambi is a must-visit place if you wish to explore arts & history of Indian state of Karnataka and its great rulers. The age-old temples in Hampi have their own story and religious significant, which will sure be a delight to comprehend.

Five Off Roading Myths That Simply Aren't True

Off roading is an incredibly fun motor sport which basically involves driving a vehicle over un-surfaced areas such as mud, sand, ice, gravel or even rocks. There are a number of different types of off roading and just as many vehicles that are specifically designed for this kind of activity. Due to its increase in popularity however there have been a number of myths flying around that simply aren't true. Here we aim to debunk these myths and finally get down to the truth.

Autos Are Not As Good As Manuals

This may have been true back in the good old days but it is no longer the case. Automatics are much easier to drive slowly and just as powerful as their manual counterparts making them perfect for off road activities. Most automatics now come with excellent disc brakes and great gear reduction ratios so they are perfect for hilly terrains and perform much better than manuals.

Filling Your Tyres With Nitrogen Is A Good idea

Nitrogen may be the air of choice for race car drivers but there are hardly any benefits to filling the tyres on an off road vehicle with the same gas. Not only is it more expensive but the speeds that an off road vehicle travels at are not high enough to see any notable differences. The theory that nitrogen tyres are less prone to punctures is also not true. The best thing you can do is to have your tyres serviced every couple of months and watch out for any cracks - there's no point in using nitrogen.

Diesels Are Slow

This is another myth that was true a few decades ago but now an off road vehicle that uses diesel is as fast as a vehicle that uses petrol. Furthermore most diesel cars come complete with a high number of gear ratios and they have a lot more torque - petrol may not be the best fuel of choice any more.

Braking Downhill Is The Worst Decision Ever

Okay so whilst it's not the worst decision ever if you do find that you are travelling too fast on a downhill slope there is no harm in braking so long as you do it gently. This myth is actually there to protect drivers but when done safely, and in the lowest gear there is no reason why you shouldn't brake whilst travelling downhill.

Traction Control Is No Good In Sand

The myth here is that traction control actually ends up slowing a vehicle down when it travels over sand but this is not true. You may think it sounds weird as the traction controls are actually linked up to the brake system but almost all of the new off road vehicles are quick to react and can do so before the momentum of the vehicle is lost. One thing you may want to make sure you do when driving through sand however is to lock the centre differential (if you have one) on sand - this can prevent the wheels from digging in which can cause your wheels to stick.

Brisbane Jeep dealer,Northstar Chrysler Jeep Dodge, has a number of different off road vehicles for you to choose from. If you have been looking for a Jeep in Brisbane visit their website and browse through the vast selection available.

Condo Rentals and What to Look For in Them

Condo rentals are fast becoming a trend for people who will be going on vacation or a trip and are looking for an alternative to hotels or resorts. The basic premise of this concept is to rent out a dwelling which is equipped with the basic necessities for several days or weeks. Usually, one can find a listing of these types of dwellings in real estate offices and other sites or offices that deal with their management. Some travel agencies also advertise these kinds of alternatives. Not all the cities in the world have these alternatives because usually condominiums are used by their owners. Those that are not are rented out in the hopes that it can generate enough income for their own maintenance.

Appealing Factors

Among the many things that vacationers need to weigh in on when wanting to rent a condominium, the location of the place is one thing that needs to be considered. Condo rentals are usually located in a high rise building that may or may not be in the heart of the city. In order to be able to check how good a location it is in, it is a good idea to research the city or the area where one wants to visit. Take note of the tourist spots and places of interest and see if these are close enough to the location of the unit. If there is some problem with the distance, then maybe the availability of transportation can be considered as well. A distant building can still be favorable if the price is right and there is enough access to transportation. Closer buildings tend to be more expensive but can be very convenient especially when eating out at night or when in need of a rest from all the walking and activities around the tourist area.

Another thing that needs to be considered when checking out condo rentals is the kind of facilities that it has. Having the basics in terms of furniture is one thing while a functional kitchen is another. Many people who wish to have an alternative to hotels and resorts seek to prepare their own meals. Having a place where one can do so is very convenient. Families that rent units like these prefer to have a functioning kitchen that has the basic necessities such as a stove, a microwave, refrigerator and some other things. This type of facility also helps them to save the expenses which are usually allotted to eating out in expensive restaurants in the tourist areas. The security of the building itself and its location is also another thing that needs to be considered by the person who wants to rent it. Some places, despite being near touristy areas, may be dangerous, especially at night. Doing one's research about the place and the city is a good idea in order to remain safe and secure.

These are just some of the things that need to be considered when looking for condo rentals. There may be other things that one can glean from the agency that is advertising the units for rent.

Learn About Legendary Creatures As You Travel in Burma

With the red stone and gold leaf of its ancient temples, the verdant abundance of its forests and the kaleidoscopic bustle of its cities, travel in Burma is a visual treat. Look beyond this colourful exterior and you'll glimpse a world of ancient myths and legends. Much of what you see on the surface is connected to age-old stories, from the architecture of temples to the land itself, featuring beings from Hindu and Buddhist cosmology as well as animist tradition. Here are some of the creatures from legend and folklore that you might hear about.

Chinthe
A powerful lion-like creature, sometimes depicted with dragon parts or human faces, Chinthes are one of the most prominent mythical creatures that can be seen as you travel in Burma, as paired statues of them often serve as temple guardians. They also appear on the currency. One story of how they came to protect temples tells how a princess married a lion and bore him a child, but left the lion and brought up her son without a father. The boy, when older, killed the lion without realising it was his father, and only later found out - so he placed a statue outside a temple in honour of the lion.

Naga
A sacred being with tremendous powers that is found in most Indian and Southeast Asian traditions, the Naga is a great serpent-like creature that can be benevolent as well as dangerous. They are creatures of the earth, with the ability to swim in the ground as if in water, as well as the ability to fly and shape-shift. Look out for sculptures of them flanking temple steps, as you travel in Burma.

Galon
Another being that appears throughout the mythology of south and southeast Asia is the Garuda, which takes on different names in different countries - here it is called the Galon. Stories of Nagas and Galon often intersect, as they are traditional enemies, and can sometimes be seen fighting in statues and pictures. A great bird with the upper torso of a man, and a beaked human face, the Galon is a being of the air, which is why the Nagas prefer to swim in the ground, where the Galon cannot attack them.

Belu
Often translated as ogres or demons, the Belu are dangerous spirits: human-like beings with long fangs who play an antagonistic role in many stories. They are a Burmese variant of the Rakshasas of Hindu tradition, and appear in tales of the Buddha as well as the Burmese version of the great Hindu epic, the Ramayana. The best chance of seeing a Belu when you travel in Burma is to look for a traditional masked dance or puppet performance of these stories. They can change their shape, and exist in several subcategories including benevolent Belus and man-eaters.

What Is Amtrak?

The choices for traveling across the country are great and offer people everything they need, regardless of the method they choose. While that is true today, not too long ago people had just one way to go far distances: Trains! Before we had the technology that we all depend on, people were choosing trains to get them to where they wanted to go. It was an enjoyable experience, one full of wonder and amazement at the views abound, that gave everyone the desire to ride in one. As technology did advance, though, many of the companies that existed began to lose money and customers, making it difficult to keep the trains in top shape. This led to the government taking action and putting a private company in charge of the rail systems in hopes that they would bring it back to its former glory. They not only succeeded in doing so, but they also provided riders with that same wonder that the trains brought about in people many years ago. This company is what we know of as Amtrak, and what many of us depend on and choose for travel.

Before Amtrak's creation in 1970, there were trains, and many of them, but technology caused them to lose what made them so special and interesting. At one time, trains were the future. They sparked the imaginations of children everywhere, had adults living life and seeing the world as if it was all a fantasy, and brought about a new and more convenient way to get somewhere. Trains had become popular with people of all ages and made life easier, but time did not help them. With the invent of planes and cars came the near end of trains. Everything they provided to people was no longer needed, especially since most people had their own private car. Amtrak exists because the government wanted to save the rails and keep them up, which is exactly what they did.

Today, a large number of people use Amtrak and many, many more have heard of it or seen them somewhere. One of the biggest reasons for their existence was to provide riders with a more modern ride, one full of everything that is now expected of public transport. Amtrak has delivered on this and given every person, from the child with wonder in their eyes to the elderly person reliving their own childhood, a ride to enjoy and remember. As technology continues to advance, the train systems will go with it, not be left behind, and grow and provide more conveniences to its riders.

As our communities and society as a whole grow, it becomes necessary to have more ways to travel. Cutting down on the pollution produced by cars and planes, as well as reduce the need for destruction to make room for more highways and airports, has given Amtrak the opportunity to grow. Trains provide people with a more affordable and easy way to move about the country, and they will continue to offer more as time goes on. With more convenience and a better ride overall, Amtrak proves that, regardless of what happened before their creation, they will continue to grow and provide people with a reliable way to travel.

Disneyland Paris Phantom Manor Ride Part 1

Phantom Manor is based in Frontierland within the main Disneyland Park, it shares a similar theme to the Haunted Mansion at Florida's Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland. It opened back on the 12th April 1992.

As you climb the hill to Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris, don't be spooked by the outer shell, if you've watched Alfred Hitchcocks film 'Psycho', it bears a huge resemblance to Bates Manor in the film. The House is the same as the other Haunted Mansion rides, just the opening scene takes place in the mansion structure itself, the remainder of the ride takes place in a building hidden from park visitors. The legend of the origins of this attraction go back to the early 1800's, Henry Ravenswood was born 1795 he was a Western settler who struck gold in Big Thunder Mountain and founded the Thunder Mesa Mining Company, that produced the city of Thunder Mesa which is now known as Frontierland.

Henry Ravenswood evolved into a very rich man and designed himself a Victorian manor proudly located high on Boot Hill overlooking Big Thunder Mountain, he and his family lived there very happily for a lot of years, his wife Martha gave birth to a little girl in 1842, they named her Melanie. In accordance to local legend, Big Thunder Mountain was rumored by the locals to be home to the thunder bird, a dominant spirit possessing a treasure, its wrath could be materialized into a terrifying earthquake. Henry Ravenswood did not have faith in the locals tales and as time passed and the gold in Big Thunder Mountain started to run out, the miners had to dig a great deal deeper into the Mountain. Henry's solitary daughter Melanie, grew from a young girl into a beautiful young woman, and became engaged to a local train engineer who planned to take her far away from her family at Thunder Mesa, much to the dismay of her father. Henry did everything he could to stop the wedding, but his ineffective efforts were put to a stop when a terrible earthquake killed him and his wife Martha.

The Thunder Bird had been awakened, and the family was never heard of again, a number of years followed and the account of what actually happened came out from beneath the rubble. On Melanie's wedding day, a mysterious, fanatical Phantom unknown to anyone appeared at the manor. Whilst Melanie was preparing herself for her big day, the jealous Phantom who was in love with Melanie, lured her fiancee up to the attic where he hanged himself by the neck from the rafters of the victorian mansion. Downstairs in the ballroom, Melanie sat all alone, hours went by with no sign of her groom. Her friends slowly started to leave, leaving Melanie all alone in the manor with only the staff of the house. "Some day", she told herself, "he will come to me". Having never taken off her wedding dress or dropped her bouquet, in the hope of her loved one returning, she wandered the house without purpose, singing songs of lost love. Unknown to Melanie, the Phantom was still in the manor, laughing at her fondness to her proposed husband, one after the other the Phantom invited his dead, demonic friends from the afterlife to fill the manor in an endless party.

Get the kids over to Euro-Disney... they'll love this ride! This is a great story to tell the kids... just before they dare to enter The Phantom manor..!

If you have several areas that interest you then you should go to a travel agency or search online to see if it can give you some ideas as to where you can go within your budget. Agencies will know a lot about the tourism in an area as well so that you can have an idea of what each area may have to offer.

Most places have an office for tourism where you as a visitor can go and find out about special things to see and places to go. Once you choose a place for your vacation and head there, you can visit these offices on your own.

Wherever you go that you are not from, you may be considered a tourist. No matter how small the town or insignificant the area, you might have an interest in knowing how the area was founded and what they are known for. Looking into the tourism of an area will not only guide you to fun and interesting places, but it may also teach you something you didn't know before.

If you are traveling with your family then it is especially important to make your vacation a learning one as well as a fun one. If you stop at a tourist office, make sure to look for museum brochures, tours of famous places, and of course information on places that will keep your kids busy.

If you are from an area that gets a lot of tourism then perhaps you dread the time of year when they all invade your space. If you own a business then you likely do not think this way. Owning a business in a high tourist area might be difficult because your main source of income will likely come in the busiest tourist time. During the off-season you might make very little. It can be difficult to live this way especially with the fluctuation of the economy.

Those who are tourists in an area might not think about the significance of what their money is doing for the people of an area. It is important to support our country's local sellers. If you are in another country, it is also nice for visitors to do the same for them.

Wherever you choose to go on your vacation, make sure to look into the various tourism options. You will likely find favorite activities, but by visiting shops and buying trinkets along the way, you are supporting people who work very hard to earn a living.

Kazakhstan: In the Land of the Steppe

Where is Kazakhstan? This is a question many people will find themselves pondering upon hearing the name of this vast, but somewhat obscure country.

The answer to this and other questions are addressed in the following article.

Like many countries once part of the former Soviet Union, a detailed knowledge of Kazakhstan is often lacking with many people having only a vague notion of its general location and other basic facts. As strange as it may seem, it is likely that many people's only introduction to Kazakhstan has come from watching the movie Borat and even then possibly thinking it was the name of a fictitious country! Jokes aside, Kazakhstan is undoubtedly deserving of greater recognition as a country well worth visiting.

Stretching from the Caspian Sea in the West to the border with China in the East and spanning over 1,500km from North to South at its widest point, the Republic of Kazakhstan is the ninth largest and largest landlocked country in the world and is roughly equivalent to the size of the four largest U.S. states of Alaska, Texas, California and Montana combined. Although by far the largest of the Central Asian nations in area, with a population of only 16.6 million Kazakhstan is sparsely populated and the wide open spaces and general sense of remoteness are one of the defining characteristics of the country.

The geography of Kazakhstan is dominated by the Eurasian Steppe: an expanse of grassy, and in places, semi-arid plain extending across huge tracts of land from Mongolia in the East and as far as Hungary in the West. In the Far East and South East, Kazakhstan's borders are ringed by the towering peaks of the Altay and Tien Shan mountain ranges among which feature some of the highest mountains in the world. In the South, the grasslands of the steppe gradually give way to an increasing arid landscape with the driest regions forming part of the Kyzl-kum desert. Three large bodies of water also feature prominently in the geography of Kazakhstan. To the West lies the largest of these-the Caspian Sea, the Northern and North Eastern shores of which mark part of Kazakhstan's Western territorial limits. Further to the East (while also not wholly located within the borders of Kazakhstan) is the Aral Sea which is the unfortunate scene of an environmental disaster of epic proportions, and it is now sadly reduced to a fraction of its former size due to much of its inflow having been diverted for irrigation purposes. Lastly, Lake Balkhash is the largest lake lying wholly within the borders of Kazakhstan and is located in the South East of the country.

Kazakhstan supports a sizeable agricultural sector and its exports of wheat, in particular, constitute a significant share of global production. However, in terms of GDP, energy in the form of exploitation of the country's petroleum and natural gas reserves is now the single most important economic activity and has been largely responsible for the Kazakhstan's rise to relative prosperity over most of the past decade or more. While many economic and financial reforms were undertaken in the years since Kazakhstan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, political reform has lagged far behind and the country has consistently scored low on almost every measure of freedom and human rights.

As with a number of other countries in the region, the fabled Silk Road played an instrumental role in the early history of what is now Kazakhstan bringing with it not just goods but contact with new ideas, cultures and religions. The Silk Road was an overland trade route that for hundreds of years was a conduit, allowing for the exchange of goods and in particular silk, between China and the West. Following the "road" West from China it, at various points, branches off in different directions; however, the various routes then converge in Central Asia, hence the close identification of the countries of that region with the Silk Road.

Traditionally, Kazakhstan was home to a nomadic herding culture of Turkic origin whose tribes came under the sway of the Mongol Empire in the 13th Century and then its successor, the Golden Horde leading eventually to the founding of the Kazakh Khanate. Prior to these events, from about the 8th Century onwards the influence of Islam began to be felt in the region and it remains the religion of the majority of Kazakhstan's population today. During the mid 19th Century with the expansion of the Russian Empire, the Kazakh's once again fell under the dominion of a foreign power and subsequently became part of the Soviet Union as the Kazakh SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic), finally gaining independence again with the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The legacy of Russian/Soviet dominance in Kazakhstan can be seen in the large number of people of Russian descent and the widespread use of Russian even among those of Kazakh ethnicity. Besides Russians, there are significant populations of other ethnic minorities such as Ukrainians, Tatars, Belarusians, Uzbeks and Germans. This ethnic diversity is also a consequence of the Soviet era when Kazakhstan received large numbers of deportees from other parts of the Soviet Union.

While once a predominantly nomadic and pastoral society based on the raising of livestock such as sheep, horses and camels; a growing majority of Kazakhstan's citizens now reside in urban centers living a typically modern, and to varying degrees, Western-influenced lifestyle. This is especially true of the younger generations. However, recent years have seen a revival in interest and renewed pride in traditional Kazakh culture, one consequence of which is reflected in the increase in the number of people learning to speak the Kazakh language.

The most populous and cosmopolitan city in Kazakhstan is Almaty located close to the border with Kyrgyzstan in a mountainous area in the South East. It is also the financial and cultural center of Kazakhstan and was the capital city until 1997 when it was moved to Astana on the Kazakh Steppe in the North-Central part of the country. Astana's dubious claim to fame is that it is officially the second coldest capital city in the world after Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia with an average mid-winter minimum temperature of -18 degrees Celsius! Other important provincial centers include Karaganda-notable for its large ethnic German population, and Shymkent; capital of South Kazakhstan province.

While Kazakhstan might not be everyone's idea of a holiday destination it has much to offer the adventurous traveler. Visitors will be rewarded with an opportunity to experience for themselves a part of the world few other people get to experience, a part of the world rich in cultural and historical significance. However, for many travelers it is the landscape of Kazakhstan which leaves the most lasting impression, from the stark beauty of the seemingly endless steppe to the grandeur of its mountains. These features have not only given shape to the physical landscape but are also powerful symbols which have shaped the consciousness of the Kazakh people over millennia.

Book Your Stay at Beach Rentals

Vacation planning doesn't have to be an all consuming process where you have to spend a substantial amount of time trying to find the perfect destination and accommodations. Even though you have heard how much you can save on hotels during your vacation if you book your stay ahead of time, a very important thing to remember is to look at alternative sources for lodging to receive extra savings. Beach rentals are great alternatives to hotels. They are very conveniently located and the best part is that they allow the guests to experience the culture and scenery up close. There are several reasons why you may want to consider booking your stay at beach rentals over traditional hotels.

First, unlike most hotels, do not get the opportunity to feel as if they were at home. With the way that hotels are designed, guests are allotted a certain amount of guests per room. The environment has a disconnected feel, so if you are traveling with family, you may find it even harder to feel completely at ease; even if it is a five star establishment. You have to pay for each additional room you may need and you also have to spend more money on food since there is no way for you to store and cook your own. You will encounter other people that you don't know in addition to the staff. Basically your expenses will add up much faster and higher than if you had chosen an alternative place to stay. Even if you don't plan on spending a good amount of time in your room, since you are on vacation, there is no reason why you should have to feel as if you are on a business trip. Beach rentals are designed a bit differently. They are constructed to look and feel just like a regular house. If you are traveling with family, you don't have to worry about which room everyone is in. meals can still be eaten together. You can grocery shop and cook your own meals or if you are in the mood, you can always take advantage of carryout or dining. Since beach rentals are located closer to many tourist attractions, you have more options available for dining than you would at hotels.

Since you have much more space available, you have more freedom and privacy. Beach rentals are rented to guests as whole facilities. This means that all of the rooms, bathrooms and other rooms in the home are set aside for you and your guests. You have a kitchen where you can prepare meals. You don't have to worry about staff interrupting in inopportune times. The whole place is yours for as long as you book your stay for and the best part is that for all of the luxury and amenities it offers, you are saving a pretty penny. Contact your travel agent or do some research to so you can see firsthand how alternative living accommodations can enhance the quality of your vacation and save you some money in the process.

The Little India area was planned during the earliest founding of Penang by Sir Francis Light. That is why today the Little India area is sometimes referred to as the Francis Light Grid. Over the years Indian traders have converged on Little India bringing with them their communities and their shops. These traders in Little India would live above their shophouses. Some of them still do so even till today. Indians who are heading to the rubber estates in Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia would often stop over here in Penang Malaysia. Some decided to make Little India their homes. This gradually led to the establishment the Indian community here in Penang Malaysia.

Cuba Vacations for Families

When to go. Although May to October is tempting as it is the lower season and deals to Cuba are plenty, it is also the hurricane season, avoid Xmas and New Years as everything is at a premium and there are no real deals to be had. January to April is the optimum time to travel as you avoid holiday traffic, the rainy season and the prices are still very affordable.

Where to go. There are many resort areas in Cuba but for families, I would recommend Varadero or Holguin. Varadero is the main tourist area of Cuba and has the most to offer in the way of family activities. Day trips can be arranged to other areas of the island that offer an entire selection of land and water activities.

Where to stay. There are many all inclusive resorts in Cuba that are family friendly and have rooms large enough for families of 4. Hotel chains such as Paradisus, Melia, Iberostar, and Beaches offer either a supervised Kid's Camp or a full range of activities for the Kid's to keep them occupied and to give Mom and Dad a break. Many of these hotels also offer kids stay and eat free deals through certain tour operators.

What to do. Besides the traditional water sports, activities, and entertainment around the resort, Cuba has a whole world of adventure off the resort, hiking, biking, swim with dolphins, sailing, snorkeling and a host of outdoor activities await you family at every part of the island. Sightseeing in Havana, Cienfuegos, Camaguey and Santiago bring plenty of family bonding opportunities and have plenty of museums detailing the culture and history of the island. Cuba also is home to some of the best nature reserves and Natural Parks in the Caribbean that are teeming with flora and fauna for photography lovers. UNESCO has designated many parts of Cuba as heritage sites and are perfect for the natural history lovers.

What to expect. A family vacation in Cuba or for that matter, any vacation is what you make of it. The beauty of Cuba is that it can be as quiet and relaxing as you want but there is such a vast selection of activities and adventure that you can also be occupied and active 24/7. Overall, you can expect perfect beaches, friendly locals, hot sunny weather, smiles on the kid's faces and memories that will last a lifetime.

When planning your next trip, remember that family vacations are Cuba Vacations.

The Colombian Amazon: The Good the Bad and the Ugly

More and more people are becoming interested in visiting the largest rainforest on the planet. I am of course referring to the Amazon. Measuring approximately 5 500 000 square kilometres it boasts the highest biodiversity in the world. One of the entry points into this vast expanse is through the Colombian city of Leticia. Leticia has become one of the primary destinations for international tourists visiting the country. However despite more and more people visiting the region the type of experience tourists encounter is very inconsistent with many leaving very dissatisfied. There are ways to ensure you have an enjoyable visit to this natural wonder. By knowing what is worthwhile, what to avoid and in general what to expect you will live this unique adventure to its fullest.

The Good

So as not to scare everyone off from the get go let's begin with what is good.

The biodiversity: The amazon has an incredible amount of birds (1300), mammals (430), reptiles (380) amphibians (430), fish (3000), insects (??? >1 000 000) and plants (40 000). Despite the fact that the many of these are experts at staying hidden you are guaranteed to see something.
The natural beauty: Independently the rivers and the forest are both beautiful. Together, at times they make for a stunning landscape. This combination of water and vegetation also lends itself to some of the most amazing sunsets you will ever see. Also, although from above it may appear as a homogeneous mass of green, the forest is varied with each particular forest type revealing its own particular beauty.
The isolation: This may not appeal to everyone but to some the sense of being a million miles away from the rest of the world is appealing. Once you manage to get away from populated and trafficked areas of the forest the feeling of peace and serenity is amazing. It is almost magical sitting under a sky filled with stars with only the symphony of night sounds to be heard. It may be difficult to experience this as few tour operators take visitors that deep into the forest but if you truly want to experience the real Amazon it is a must.

The Bad

The negatives as in most or probably all areas have nothing to do with the physical location but rather how it is managed and the people that live and work there. Here in the Amazon it is no different.

Poor infrastructure: Despite tourism making up most of the local economy there is very little money that has been invested into infrastructure. Rampant corruption has meant that the large sums of money that are available for public projects disappear. This shows in the pot holed streets the basic airport, the very visitor unfriendly port and virtual lack of quality tourist information.
The same poor options offered everywhere: For some strange reason almost everyone will try and sell you the same few experiences. For the most part these experiences are not worthwhile. The standard tours offered to most visitors include Monkey Island, the native community of Macedonia, the National Park Amacayacu and Lake Tarapoto, Lake Tarapoto being the only spot I can truly recommend.
At monkey you are guaranteed you will see monkeys however the problem is that the one species you will see is not native to the Island and only survive there because people feed them. Originally it was an American who brought both the monkeys and the natives to the island and as it was then it still is not an ecologically friendly site to visit. The community of Macedonia suffers from a lack of authenticity. The natives many times try to sell the idea that they still dress in grass skirts and wander around half naked all the time while the reality is that many have huge sound systems in their homes and some even have Direct TV. The National Park is likely one of the greatest disappointments. Tourism within the Park is handled by a private company and they only offer a 500 meter wooden pathway with the only interesting sight being a large ceiba tree. It is relatively expensive and only shows a very superficial look at the true natural beauty hidden within the park. In general it is a little difficult to find sights that authentically show the Amazon as most operators prefer to sell what has always been sold and many great alternatives are ignored.

The Ugly

There is definitely an ugly side and hopefully most won't see or at least not notices it. I am referring to the total indifference towards conservation and the environment in general. For whatever reason the culture in and around Leticia is very exploitative. By this I mean any resource that can be used is taken advantage of regardless of sustainability. This has been seen with logging with hunting and with fishing. Tourists may notice this while they walk through the forest, in many areas it's quite difficult to see animals yet in all the communities and some hotels and tourist attractions you see them tied up or on display. Here is where tourists can help take action for change.

Become a true ecotourist, think about what impact each attraction may have on the local ecosystem and on the environment and don't support those that are having a negative one.

I don't want to end on such a preachy or negative note and as my good section was fairly short I will mention a few more things in the Amazon's favour. The Amazon is simply a natural marvel, the amount of life that surrounds you at all times the power and size of the river and the majesty of the forest are things that you will not soon forget.

Regardless of the intensity of the tour that you choose you can't help feel like you are on an adventure in one of the earth's great wildernesses. There is something about the Amazon that makes you feel like you have left the rest of the world behind. The sense of exploration and discovery is impossible to ignore.

I have been told that I am not a good salesman, but I hope in the end I have not undersold this fantastic tourist destination. My intention is to give an honest overview of this region, including both the positive and the negative but with the wish that your interest will be piqued and you will come and experience an amazing adventure.

-Julian Barajas
